Perish the thought an NCO by any other name BUCK Sgt is still an NCO that's what my promotion certificate states on it N-C-O when I was promoted to Sgt/E-5!

Hello to all:
I achieved E-4 on 01 Dec. '68 at Ellsworth AFB, SoDak, Base Police Sect. Serving in 2 Asian Bases, as well, I never
laid eyes on 3 stripes without a central star. On arrival at Clark AB, Jan. '69, I was given a "briefing card" wth the message:
"Having achieved the rank of NCO, special responsibilities devolve upon you. These are listed in AFR 39-6. They take on
new meaning for those of you who are assigned to a foreign land in support of our national policy. Your role as an NCO
becomes increasingly important. The many young airmen who are assigned to a foreign land for the first time will be looking
to you for example and counsel. I trust that you will become keenly aware of your responsibilities, and meet this challenge
in the fine NCO fashion.

Francis C. Gideon
Lieutenant Geneal, USAF
Commander, 13tth AF

Sure looked to me as if I truly was an E-4 NCO! (Even the 516th Philippine Constabulary guys I worked with on gates
called me "Sarhento.")

I was made A1C in Nov 69 and when I was in Vietnam going from E3 to E4 Sgt was a WAPS test. I Received E4 Sgt in October 71 after a mix up in my personnel record kept me from getting it earlier. In 72 I think they went to E4 subdued star as a Senior Amn then after 6 mo you went from Sr Amn to Sgt. Supervisory position could only go to E4 Sgt. I had my 3 stripe pinned on my the First Sgt of the (to be) 91st SPS at Minot. After 72 the grade of E4 did not have to go through WAPS

I was promoted to E4 (Airman 1st Class) while at Clark AB in 1967. While at Clark they made E4's Buck Sgt's. I was reassigned to Minot AFB in 1967 and worked as a Senior Security Controller. At the time the Senior Security Controller was a SSgt slot but they did not have Saffs to fill 30 slots so the vacant slots were filled with Buck Sgts. There was no distinction between E4's, the progression of ranks was AB,A2,A1 then Buck Sgt. The security teams in the missile field consisted of six members, 2 members were security controllers. If both security controllers were Buck Sgts the one with the most time in grade was the senior security controller.

Nice bit of history, thank you. I was at Minot in the 80's and 90's. Our FSC's what you call Security Controllers were anywhere from Senior Airmen to Tech Sgt. Depending on flight manning that week. We didn't have anything called a Senior Security Controller by then.
