Gen LeMay— Air Force Magazine, 9 Apr 15, John A. Tirpak

Clarifying recent comments that he wants incoming Air Force Global Strike Command chief Gen. Robin Rand to be another Curtis LeMay, Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh said Wednesday the comparison he intended was in terms of Air Force leadership. "LeMay ... was an iconic leader," Welsh told reporters in Washington, D.C. "That's what I want the new commander" of AFGSC to be, he said. "I want him to lead this command in a way that is positive, is forceful, is clearly moving in a direction where the Air Force needs to take a stronger role in [the nuclear] debate in the country. And Curtis LeMay certainly did that." USAF, he said, has gradually "lost" its centrality to the nuclear discussion, and Welsh believes it should be back at the center of it. He emphasized his own "apolitical" bent and said LeMay's post-USAF political career and famous comments about nuclear warfare are of no interest to him. "I just don't care," he said. He wants Rand to be influential "on behalf of our Air Force in the missions and the debates that that command needs to be involved in. That's what I was trying to say." Welsh said he doesn't know if Rand is a cigar-smoker, but if he does, "that wouldn't have kept me from nominating him."

SSgt DowellEglin Airman Helps Rescue 4 From Burning Vehicle

PANAMA CITY BEACH — As a first responder at Eglin Air Force Base, it’s in Rodney Dowell’s nature to stop and help others.

The staff sergeant was driving to work around 5:30 Monday morning from his girlfriend’s home in Panama City when he saw flames by Camp Helen State Park.

When he got to the source of the smoke, he found a flipped over Jeep Compass with a male driver and three female passengers piled in screaming for help.

“I pulled over, got out and started running over,” he said. “I saw the passengers in the back bunched on top of each other.”

Dowell was able to pull both passengers in the back, safely out of the vehicle. He handed one of them his phone to call 911 while he went to the front of the car.

They were both in shock, he said.

“In the front, the passenger was unconscious and the flames were picking up, but I couldn’t get her and the driver out,” Dowell said.

“I just wanted to save these people.”

He flagged down two other vehicles from the road. The drivers helped pull the front passenger and driver out of the Jeep.

The 27-year-old driver, Damian Cambell, of Montego Bay, Jamaica, was taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol media release.

Two of his passengers had minor injuries, while the third had none.

Cambell was driving east on U.S. Highway 98, when he traveled into the median and struck a culvert. He then crossed into the westbound lane, where the vehicle started to rotate clockwise and went onto the north shoulder.

The Jeep flipped on its right side on the shoulder and caught fire, the release said.

Dowell stayed on the scene until the fire was out and everyone was safe. He said he had never been in a situation like the crash before and called his heroic moment “one of the big milestones of my life.”

When he finally made it to work, he continued on with his day, but the event followed him.

“When I was talking to the police officers on the scene, they were telling me how the fire was melting the car...” he said. “It kinda hit me later on — what if the other guys didn’t stop and I couldn’t get them all out of the car?”

The first thing Dowell did when he left the scene was call his mom and sister.

“Honestly, I called to tell them I loved them,” he said. “Anything can happen in the blink of an eye and you never know when the last time you get that chance will be.”

The Security Forces Museum at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas is now part of Air Education and Training Command’s (AETC) commitment to fostering Airman Character development. This action is part of Air Force Chief of Staff General Mark Welsh’s CAPSTONE initiative to inspire Airmen from all Air Force career fields by showcasing Air Force heritage and history.

Until the staff was in place, the museum was open only by appointment and for weekly technical training. The staff is now almost completely in place and the Security Forces collection is open four days a week. It is now open on Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. It is closed on Wednesday. The hours mirror those for the collection in the Airman Heritage Museum.

Key members of AETC’s new heritage and history leadership team met in January and again in March with the Security Forces Museum Foundation board to outline plans to continue transforming the only Air Force museum dedicated to a single AFSC. The Foundation board learned that the facility will remain the Security Forces collection, but as an integral part of AETC’s umbrella organization: The Airman Heritage Museum and Character Development Center.

Ultimately, AETC’s heritage and history leadership team, which includes the new command curator, want to significantly improve communications with the Security Forces Foundation board regarding strategic planning in various areas including promotion of the museum to the Air Force and public, interaction with the Airman Heritage Museum Foundation regarding future plans for a new Airman Heritage Museum, and the development of new interactive high-technology exhibits. The goal is to keep the museum relevant to its audience and help in all aspects of AETC’s mission and inspire the next generation of defenders.
