Defenders -

As we continue to build upon the success from the last three years of focused senior leader investment in our Defenders, our Security Forces senior leaders met once again for the bi-annual Security Forces Executive Board (SFEB).  The SFEB is a career field decision-making body of SF senior Civilian, Enlisted and Officer leaders charged with making critical decisions that impact the SF enterprise.

The SFEB focused on decision briefs with topics ranging from a career field Functional Fitness Test, results of Squadron of the Future (SoTF) beta testing, and the status of Leader–Led Training (LLT).  Efforts of the SFEB continue to maintain momentum on career field improvements essential to creating a more lethal and ready Defender.

In order to be physically mission ready we will continue to move forward on the establishment of a career field functional fitness test.  Planning is currently underway to on-ramp a test that will evaluate Defenders ability to conduct mission oriented tasks through a series of performance oriented events.  Once testing is complete, we will solidify the standards and testing parameters and begin to progressively onboard the functional fitness test.

As part of the Year of the Defender, seventeen units across multiple MAJCOMs participated in a squadron re-organization beta test.  The beta test was designed to explore how to improve squadron effectiveness.  The beta test identified several benchmarks that can be implemented where appropriate across the enterprise.  However, the overall SoTF construct proved to be under resourced from a manpower perspective and resulted in added strain to operations and training in our frontline units.  The SFEB directed the cessation of beta testing.

As always, we took a look at training and how we will continue to evolve as we prepare for the current and future fight.  A deep dive was conducted into Leader-Led Training, which was designed to improve the quality of trainers available to unit Commanders.  Leader-Led Trainers complete a qualification process that provides tools to develop, mentor, and coach all identified topics within the Training Catalog.  Flight Leader-Led Trainers and supervisors use an evaluate-train-evaluate model to ensure each Defender is proficient and competent in their abilities to execute mission requirements.  An operational planning team conducted a review of LLT and determined that this is replicated in other training venues.  As a result, we will develop a plan to off-ramp LLT and focus on maximum utilization of the current courses in the training pipeline.

Finally, Sustainment Training remains continual focus area that has huge implications to the readiness of our Defenders.  The responsiveness of the Air Force Security Forces Center in designing and executing improved and informed Mission Focused Rehearsal Training to meet emergent requirements was critical to improving Base Defense across several operating locations.  Training is the foundation to readiness, as such the career field will continue to invest and build new sustainment curriculum that meets specific mission requirements.

As always, our Defenders continue to impress senior leaders with their professionalism and unblinking security every day.  Together we will continue to organize, train, and equip our Defenders to remain proficient and ready, even in a challenging COVID environment.
