True enough! Blue star...no more pay. At least it didn't make any difference in my paycheck.

I was promoted to E-4 Sargeant in Oct 1967 at Tan Son Nhut with the 377th SPS. They just started the Sargeant thing. Same priviliges as E5 as far as I know. Went back to Lockbourne AFB Columbus, Ohio. I remember a lot of Ncos didn't like the fact that we could go into the NCO club.

I first served (4 yrs) in a Marine Air Wing. After discharge as a Marine L/CPL (E3) I took a Civil Service Test & was offered a Air Reserve Technician Position, which was WG-10 but had to also enlist in the Air Force Reserves. I joined as E4 (Buck) Sgt. This was 1968. By 1969 I was a W10/step 2 & a E5 Staff Sergeant but the 442nd had a good # E4 SGT'S till the rank system was revamped. I retired from AFRES in early 1985.

From one young "Buck Sgt" to a Vietnam real Buck Sgt! I was happy when I sewed on my 3 stripes and my star and I still miss being called a BUCK Sgt Sarge! Take care Sir. At least I have the photo's to prove it.

You can't stop progress and finally Uncle SAM phased out the rank for us in 1991 I think. It was a slap in my face when I joined 315th AFRES in Charleston as a temporary Personnelist for the Commanders Support Staff then I went back to the cop shop eventually I was promoted back to SSGT then honorably left the military in Dec 2001 after serving in Kuwait and called back to active duty for 911! HOO-rah my last award and Dec was my NDM and Kuwait Expeditionary medal when I was at Jabber.

I remember.... we went from Senior Airman to Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. Usually a one year period between Senior Airman and Sergeant. B)
